Hispanic Heritage Month - Spotlight on Vince De Jesus
September 15 to October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month! We are excited to share short interviews with our Hispanic company members. Our final interview is with Vince De Jesus, the Composer and Arranger of the music for The Nightingale.
Tell us about your family heritage.
My Mom's family is from Tamaulipas, Mexico and my Father's family is from Puerto Rico. I am Mexi-Rican.
How has your Hispanic Heritage played a part in shaping you as an artist?
Growing up, the music and food from Mexico and Puerto Rico had a big influence on me and my desire to become an artist. I have always been interested in learning about and incorporating the sounds, flavors and spirit of where my family comes from into my art.
Are there aspects of your Hispanic heritage that have played a part in your creation of "The Nightingale"?
Yes, there are a number of Afro-Latin rhythms and musical styles from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, and Brazil present in the music for The Nightingale. The percussive elements and music in pieces like the Festival of the Nightingale and the Forest Creatures represent both indigenous and the Caribbean cultures, full of life, celebration and connection to nature.
